Last weekend, on Friday September 1, a few of us set out for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Our plan was to take the overnight bus on Friday night, stay there all of Saturday, and then take the overnight bus back to Singapore on Saturday night. The plan seemed simple enough and I was told by many people that you buy the tickets for the coach bus on the spot. The bus we planned to take was leaving at 11:00 pm so we arrived at the bus terminal at 9:00 pm, only to find out that the tickets were sold out :(. So, it was 9 pm and we were running around the city (literally running with our backpacks and all as if we were on the Amazing Race) trying to find a bus that would take us to KL. Unfortunately, all the coach buses leaving from that area of the city were sold out and so we found a random city bus that would take us across the Malaysian border so we just had to take our chances and get on the bus in the hopes that once across the border, we would find a bus there that would get us to KL. Once we got across the border, to Johor Bahru, we realized that we would need to take another city bus to an area called Larkin and after wating for about 15 minutes, we found just that bus. Once we got to the Larkin bus terminal, we were bombarded by people trying to sell us tickets to KL. The bus terminal was packed with people and lines and lines of buses, and we were so confused that we just went with the first bus company that tried to sell us tickets. I'm so sure that we were ripped off but at that point, it was 1 in the morning, we were in a random city in Malaysia, and we really just wanted to get to our destination. Once the bus started travelling, we were glad that we could finally relax and get some rest.....little did we know that the air conditioning on the bus could only be on or off, not controlled in any way, so the temperature on the bus was about 10 degrees celcius. On top of that, the bus was violently bumpy, so when we finally arrived in KL at 5:30 in the morning, we were all running on between 20 minutes and 2 hours of sleep. The trip itself was really fun though, although KL's city centre was very westernized and I was hoping for a little more culture. There were a couple of museums and sites that we didn't make it to, but now that I know how to get there and what to avoid, I will probably make another trip back there sometime before I leave Singapore. Enjoy the pictures!
